By tapping into the limitless potentials of the quantum field through the subconscious mind, we hold the power to reshape our reality and redefine healing.
Hypnotherapy utilises the power and wisdom of the subconscious mind to influence positive therapeutic outcomes. The Cambridge Dictionary defines it as “the part of your mind that notices and remembers information when you are not actively trying to do so, and influences your behaviour even though you do not realize it” where “mind” means “the part of a person that makes it possible for him or her to think, feel emotions, and understand things”. Where does that “part of a person” reside then? Inside the body? The brain? The quantum field?
Traditional science, which underpins the Australian curriculum, teaches that the mind originates and functions within the brain. This is the accepted (albeit outdated) belief of a Classical Universe based upon a scientific theory that the Universe consists only of physical matter. However, with the emergence of Quantum Mechanics, we now understand that at the sub-atomic level, the Universe is mostly “empty space” filled with information, energy, and potentials.
“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” Nikola Tesla
Nonlocality, in quantum physics, suggests that separated particles remain highly correlated regardless of distance, implying that they can influence each other’s state without any physical connection. For example, we can do something to this particle over here and something simultaneously happens to another particle over there. This challenges the traditional notion of cause and effect, where one event leads to another over time and space. Instead, science is finding that information shared among particles is instant, existing outside the spacetime framework that we perceive reality to reside within. Einstein famously referred to this as “spooky action at a distance”.
Since all matter is composed of particles, and all particles are nonlocal, this raises questions about what our five senses are truly experiencing as reality. This concept challenges the traditional model of a reality confined by separation and replaces it with one where everything in the Universe, including humans, is interconnected in a shared field of information, often referred to as the collective or Universal consciousness.
“In theoretical physics, that void is pure consciousness: a place where infinite possibilities exist in immaterial, non-physical form. This realm of nothing is a realm of pure thought – rich in energy and frequency, where everything is connected.” Dr. Joe Dispenza
Given this perspective, it doesn't seem far-fetched that hypnotherapy might tap into this field, allowing individuals to access information or experiences not necessarily from their own personal thoughts, memories, or history. It’s important to exercise discernment here. If nonlocality allows access to a shared field of information, healing practitioners should recognise that "remembered" information, memories, and experiences may stem from a collective source rather than solely from an individual's personal history. However, when the intention is set for higher-order healing, the subconscious mind typically processes only the information that is beneficial to the individual, regardless of the source.
Phenomena such as telekinesis, precognition, retrocausality, and telepathy is supported by quantum theory and has gained positive scientific interest and evidence. This may be the collective consciousness within the quantum field which we are all plugged into, and with which enables information to be accessed, borrowed, and sent, like a library of thought forms and experiences. Modern scientific research into the mind and consciousness has found statistically significant results which support the Quantum Mechanical theory that “mind acausally mediates actualization” which means that our mind works in a non-linear fashion, non-locally, and ultimately creates our reality that we perceptually experience.
In 1801, a scientist named Thomas Young conducted an experiment with photons of light called the “double slit experiment.” He passed light through two slits to observe where it landed on a screen behind them. The light formed not two parallel lines but rather a band of dark and light lines, indicating an interference pattern. This suggested that light behaved not as a particle (matter) but as a wave (energy), demonstrating wave-particle duality. However, he also observed that when the light was being watched, it passed through one slit or the other, behaving as a particle.
“The opposite of a fact is falsehood, but the opposite of one profound truth may very well be another profound truth.” Niels Bohr
This strange phenomenon led to the puzzling idea that merely observing something could determine whether it is solid matter or not! In fact, many modern physicists, as well as ancient philosophers like Plato and spiritual leaders like the Buddha, have theorised that our conscious intention and focused attention play a key role in shaping our physical reality. This challenges the traditional materialist belief that reality is merely an observable and measurable phenomenon to which humans simply react and live as a consequence.
By suggesting the mind—and by extension, the subconscious mind—may possess nonlocal characteristics, then the mind and body may be connected in ways that transcend physical proximity and thus we can broaden the scope of therapeutic hypnosis to enable rapid actualizations and changes. If reality is probabilistic, rather than deterministic, then it is not fixed, and what we observe becomes what we experience, meaning there are many potential realities to choose from.
“We are what we think, all that we are arises with our thoughts, with our thoughts we make the world.” Buddha
If we can rapidly change our physical realities using our mind, then healing must not be excluded from this natural phenomenon. Instant healings are not unheard of and are often seen as "miracles" by those with religious beliefs or as "medical anomalies" by those with more classical physics perspectives. Despite scepticism and reluctance within Western medicine to fully embrace the body's and mind's innate ability to heal, this concept is well accepted within spiritual healing communities.
Ancient native peoples have always known about and worked with energy, especially in relation to healing the body, and along the way we have given our power and innate knowledge over to the western medical model, which is inherently disempowering and firmly rooted in the classical physics notion of a physical universe. That is, if there is a physical symptom, then there must be a physical reason and therefore a physical solution (i.e., take a tablet, have surgery, etc). The problem with this paradigm is that it is based on an inherently flawed premise: that the Universe, and everything in it, is physical.
Medical science is finally dragging the placebo effect out from under the inconvenient rug they shoved it under, brushing the dust off, and looking at it not as the thorn in their empirical studies’ side, but rather an olive branch – a gift from the Universe offering a promise of self-empowerment, limitless health, and freedom to choose healing. Okay, so this might be going a bit far. But science is starting to at least question this mind-body connection and scratch its pragmatic head to consider the implications it may have for the body’s ability to heal itself, which could challenge the efficacy of current first-line pharmacological and surgical treatments. Healing oneself using energy and the quantum power of thought and intention may not be as lucrative a business as the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, but I digress.
“Pharmaceutical companies are actively involved in sponsoring the definition of diseases and promoting them to both prescribers and consumers.” Moynihan, Heath, and Henry, 2002.
With the birth of quantum physics, science is only now beginning to catch up with what spirituality has long recognised. Hypnotherapy may serve as a bridge between the “physical” manifestation of symptoms and the underlying emotional (or energetic) cause. Given that human consciousness is nonlocal, and reality is mostly non-physical, physical disease and illness may need to be redefined using the nonlocal nature of reality as its new anchor. Symptoms may then be viewed as energetic phenomena imprinted in the quantum field of information, where all other potentials exist.
If the perceived physical Universe is not made of “stuff” but rather vibrational patterns of energy expressed as both particle and wave, dependent on our observation, might we redirect our attention toward a more desirable physical experience within the field of infinite potentials? Could we utilise the expansiveness and creativity of the subconscious mind to preview and “shop” for a more favourable reality, say a healthy version of our body? Theoretically, as there is no time in the quantum realm, once we pick out our preferred version and observe it into being, we should be able to instantaneously embody it.
“But what is now? There is no such thing in physics; it is not even clear that ‘now’ could ever be described, let alone explained, in terms of physics.… Notions such as ‘the past,’ ‘the present’ and ‘the future’ seem to be more linguistic than physical.… There is no universal now, but only a personal one—a ‘here and now.’ This strongly suggests that we look to the mind, rather than to the physical world, as the origin of the division of time into past, present, and future.…There is none of this in physics.… No physical experiment has ever been performed to detect the passage of time. As soon as the objective world of reality is considered, the passage of time disappears like a ghost into the night.” Paul Davies, physicist.
There is one caveat to this instant, drive-through, just-think-your-way-healthy theory: you need to believe it. Belief is part of the observed reality of the quantum. We see what we believe we will see; “we will believe it when we see it” is a mantra that humans have been taught to uphold. Self-development author Dr. Wayne Dyer suggests the opposite is true; “you will see it when you believe it”. The Universe is inherently meaningless; that is, nothing has meaning until we assign a meaning to it. Quantum physics suggests that we are all made up of 99.99999% empty space and that our reality is an observed reality, subjective to our own perception and beliefs about reality itself. Objective reality, time, and space are becoming obsolete concepts, revealing themselves as well-crafted and highly convincing illusions.
The concepts of past, present, and future are then called into question and the events within them being mere concepts or memories of many “now” moments, stacking up in a vertical fashion rather than the usual linear timeline in which we frame our lives. The word, “healing” itself, with its “ing” suffix, suggests a process – a passage of time, where we expect healing to require effort, cause and effect, and patience.
“The best way to predict your future is to create it.” Dr Joe Dispenza
But if the quantum field is made of information, could we, as a collective consciousness, shift our beliefs about healing? Instead of viewing it as a process of restoring a damaged body, what if we simply chose a different energetic vibration in the field, observed it, and embodied that new pattern of information to experience a new body? Are we repairing the old, or are we creating something entirely new?
If we are indeed creating a new body, it would be wise to use the subconscious mind to explore the quantum field of limitless potential realities and select the one that best serves our lives. Hypnotherapy bypasses the conscious mind, which holds our limiting beliefs and worldview, and taps into the vast subconscious—a nonlocal aspect of our "mind" that connects to the limitless quantum field of information. When we consider the human body's healing potential through the lens of quantum physics, particularly nonlocality and wave-particle duality, we open the possibility for reconfiguring atoms into a healthy form, drawn directly from the quantum field.
Since the subconscious mind influences our behaviour without our awareness, hypnosis allows us to actively observe its contents and the forces driving our actions. By becoming aware of these hidden influences, we can shift our focus away from undesirable patterns and toward new potentials that have yet to be "realised" into physical matter. While energy healers have long applied these concepts to their healing methods, the application of quantum theory within the hypnotherapy field is in its infancy - what an exciting time to be a hypnotherapist!
